About NPS

What is the National Pension System?

The National Pension System (NPS) is a government-sponsored, voluntary, long-term retirement savings scheme regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). It is available to all Indian citizens between the ages of 18 and 70 — making it the most accessible and tax-efficient pension vehicle in India.

NPS combines a market-linked investment structure (across equity, government bonds, and corporate bonds) with a guaranteed pension component at retirement, providing the best of both worlds: growth potential during accumulation and income certainty in retirement.

The defining advantage of NPS is its unmatched tax efficiency — it is the only investment instrument that provides a tax deduction under three separate sections of the Income Tax Act (80CCD(1), 80CCD(1B), and 80CCD(2)), potentially saving high-income earners ₹25,000–₹50,000+ in taxes annually.

Tier I Account
Primary NPS Account
The main NPS account. Contributions qualify for 80CCD tax deductions. Mandatory for NPS enrollment. Withdrawal restricted until age 60 (with exceptions for specific purposes). Minimum contribution: ₹500/month or ₹6,000/year.
Tier II Account
Voluntary Savings Account
An optional, flexible savings account linked to Tier I. No tax benefit (except for government employees). No withdrawal restrictions — can be withdrawn freely. Minimum contribution: ₹250/transaction. Good for short-to-medium-term goals alongside NPS Tier I.

Tax Benefits — Unmatched by Any Other Instrument

80CCD(1)
Employee Contribution
Up to ₹1,50,000
Deduction for employee's NPS contribution — up to 10% of basic salary (15% for self-employed). Counted within the ₹1.5L limit of Section 80C.
80CCD(1B)
Additional Deduction
₹50,000 extra
Exclusively for NPS — an additional ₹50,000 deduction over and above the 80C limit of ₹1.5L. Effectively extends your total deduction to ₹2L. This is NPS's unique advantage.
80CCD(2)
Employer Contribution
14% salary (Govt)
Employer's NPS contribution (up to 14% for central government employees, 10% for others) is deductible — NOT subject to the ₹1.5L 80C limit. Major benefit for salaried professionals.
